SAN JOSE – With family and friends attending, CAP National Legal Officer Colonel Ted Chavez presented three distinct awards on a beautiful Silicon Valley afternoon.

Cadet Tom Posey received the General Billy Mitchell Award #53088. Cadet Posey’s award signifies his completing the first eight achievements of the cadet program. In addition, Cadet Posey passed an arduous 100 question examination testing leadership theory and aerospace topics. Since its inception over 30 years ago, over 42,000 cadets have earned this honor.

In tandem with his Mitchell Award, Cadet Posey also was recognized for having earned an opportunity to attend the United States Air Force Academy Preparatory School in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The Academy Preparatory School, better known as the "Prep School," is designed to academically, physically and militarily prepare qualified young men and women to compete for an opening at the U.S. Air Force Academy. Located on the Academy grounds, this ten-month school provides intensive academic preparation valued at over $32,500.

Capt Todd Bejsovec received his Pilot Wings from Col Chavez after qualifying in all aspects befitting such an honor. In addition to earning a rating as a pilot, Capt Bejsovec also recently completed certification to conduct cadet orientation flights. In the history of Squadron 36, Capt Bejsovec is the first assigned member to earn either distinction and has proven to be a critical asset to Squadron 36 as the unit’s aerospace education officer and recently-assigned transportation officer.

Maj Johanna Montgomery, a recent graduate of CAP’s Pacific Region Staff College, was recognized by Col Chavez for her contributions as a group leader. As a member of Seminar 3, Maj Montgomery was selected as the “Most Valuable Player” in recognition of her personal guidance and support to her seminar’s week-long task at Region Staff College: the creation and presentation of doctrine associated with Homeland Security. Col Chavez presented Maj Montgomery a plaque on behalf of her seminar team members.

Col Chavez happily noted that during recent discussions with many high-level members of Civil Air Patrol and the Air Force, he was envied for his being able to participate in presenting these awards at Squadron 36. “All of the supporting levels of CAP assist in making things happen at the squadron level. I’m so honored to be here and assist in recognizing these great people.”
